Tehran, 20th December 2014 -7th January 2015

Introduction

Today, Islamic Studies is a major sub-discipline of the wider area of Religious Studies in many academic programs throughout the world. Moving away from the older “area studies” paradigms, the Religious Studies nature within which the field of Islam is now situated allows for Islamic Studies to undertake a  much broader engagement with a variety of disciplines across the humanities and the social sciences. There is much debate in academia today concerning which theoretical and practical paradigms within the field of Religious Studies are most amenable to dealing with the complexity and variegated nature of Islamic histories and societies. Without seeking to arrive at an answer as to which interpretive model is most “correct” with respect to Islamic Studies, this series of seminars will seek to engage the various problems and methods which are employed in the study of Islam in the modern academy, thereby enriching our understanding of the multiple voices and interpretive methods which are at play in current academic representations of Islam. Now the main question are:

Which of the approaches or methods in Islamic Studies could lead us to a more effective and realistic results?

Which are the strong and which are the weak points in the approaches and methods of contemporary Islamic Studies?

How one can make use of a comprehensive and realistic vision to realize a sound Research?

How one can examine the authenticity and authority of every approach?

Main topics:

1.      The different methods used in Religious Studies

2.      Examination of the methodological principles of Religious Studies

3.      A critical engagement with various approaches to the study of Islam, such as reductionism, historicism, hermeneutical and traditional, etc.

4.      A disciplinary view of such areas as Qur’anic Studies, Islamic Thought and Spirituality, and Islamic History.

5.      An assessment of the state of Religious Studies and the role of Islamic Studies within it, with respect to the present and the future to suggest a harmonic Islamic Studies.
